B.S. degree from Lamar University with highest honors, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Texas A&M University on a National Defense and Education Act Fellowship
1981, he received the Amoco Foundation Award for distinguished teaching, in 1990 won a Teacher/Scholar Award, and in 2011 he won the Distinguished Texas Scientist Award given by the Texas Academy of Science.
