The Rankine temperature scale is named after the Scottish physicist, W.J.M. Rankine (1820–1872). The scale is defined such that zero degrees Rankine (designated by 0°R) is absolute zero and an interval of 1°R is equivalent to 1°F. In this way, the correspondence between the Rankine scale and the Fahrenheit Scale is analogous to that between the Celsius and the Kelvin scales.
