Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is a white crystalline solid with a molecular weight of 39.997 that melts at 591 K, boils at 1661 K and has a specific gravity of 2.13. It readily absorbs water to form an aqueous solution, which is corrosive and an irritant to skin. Other common names for this chemical are caustic soda and white caustic.
