Wind Tunnel Experiment

Wind tunnel experiment is a set of procedures and techniques aimed at modeling air flow and the flow interaction with the streamlined body. In the wind tunnel experiment, the analyzed body is fixed (stationary), while the surrounding medium is moving.

Often, theoretical methods are not sufficient for solving the problems of aerodynamics of an aerospace vehicle due to incompleteness of mathematical models. Therefore, wind tunnel experiment along with the similarity laws is the most reliable way to determine aerodynamic characteristics of an aerospace vehicle. Wind tunnel experiment allows to study different parameters using models or separate components of an aerospace vehicle, which is almost impossible in the full-scale conditions.

Specification of integral aerodynamic characteristics using wind tunnel balance, specification of aerodynamic characteristics of the model components (control surfaces, fins and flaps) using special strain gauge, measurement of pressure distribution along the model surface, specification of characteristics of jet engines and propellers, physical studies that include analysis of the boundary layer on the model surface, visualization of flows on the model surface and in its vicinity, visualization of vortices, - these are the main problems considered within the scope of the wind tunnel experiment.
