Continuum
A medium can be considered as a continuum
if its discrete structure is neglected.
Comments. 1. We distinguish between : a) a
"homogeneous continuum" in which the
physical properties at different points are
identical at the same temperature and pressure,
and b) an "inhomogeneous continuum,"
in which the physical properties at different
points are not identical at the same temperature
and pressure.
2. We also distinguish between: a) an "isotropic
continuum," whose physical properties do not
depend on direction, and b) an
"anisotropic continuum," whose physical
properties are different in different directions.
